Clinical outcomes of patients presenting with spontaneous coronary artery dissection versus takotsubo syndrome: a propensity score analysis

Abstract: Background: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection and takotsubo syndrome are non-atherosclerotic causes of acute coronary syndromes. They share clinical features including female predominance and frequent triggers. We compared the outcomes of patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection and patients with takotsubo syndrome with similar clinical characteristics. Methods: Patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection ( n=81) or takotsubo syndrome ( n=341) were 1:1 propensity matched according to … Show more

“…As compared with female takotsubo patients, patients with coronary dissection show a worse long term clinical outcome, mainly due to rehospitalization for cardiac causes. 10 These data further confirm that primary takotsubo occurring due to emotional stress in females is a benign disease. 11 Data of the InterTAK registry confirm such a hypothesis, since patients with events related to emotional stress had a favourable short and long term prognosis, while patients with takotsubo secondary to physical activities, medical conditions and neurological disease had worse prognosis.…”

“…The most frequent identifiable triggers in SCAD were an emotional stress followed by intense physical activity. Precipitating factor distribution in both groups did not differ from those seen in previous registries [11,17,18,25,26]. Of note, our cohort included a 41% rate of secondary TTS forms (physical factor as a potential trigger).…”
