Clinical performance of a light-cured denture base material compared to polymethylmethacrylate—a randomized clinical study

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical long-term performance of a visible light-cured resin (VLCR) denture base material and to compare it to a well-established polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-based denture acrylic in a randomized split-mouth clinical long-term study. One hundred removable partial dentures in 90 patients, with at least two saddles each, were investigated. One saddle was made of VLCR, while the other was made of PMMA at random. Plaque adhesion, tissue reaction, and technical parameter… Show more

“…Several studies in this decade have explored innovative approaches to enhancing dental prosthesis materials. These include the application of varnish (Sterngold), glazing adhesive (Biscover LV and surface coat), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) coatings using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, and the incorporation of antifungal agents such as 5% miconazole, characterized nickel, and nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiCl 2 , NiNPs, and NiONPs), derivatives of the compound 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2]octane (DABCO), Yamani henna powder, and silver (AgNPs) and titanium oxide (TiO 2 NPs) nanoparticles, into dental prosthesis manufacturing materials [ 53 , 57 , 61 , 69 , 79 , 84 , 87 , 90 , 113 ].…”

“…The primary disadvantages are brittleness and low impact resistance . VLP resins tend to retain more surface biofilm than PMMAs; however, there is no corresponding mucosal reaction . Plaque retention as well as poor strength may be related to a relatively high degree of porosity found in VLP resins.…”

“…6,7 VLP resins tend to retain more surface biofilm than PMMAs; however, there is no corresponding mucosal reaction. 8 Plaque retention as well as poor strength may be related to a relatively high degree of porosity found in VLP resins. The volume of porosity is related to the fact that the resins cannot be polymerized under pressure.…”

“…Photosensitizing agent such as camphorquinone serves as the initiator for polymerization while visible light acts as the activator [1].The latest generation of light activated denture base resin consists of a base forming resin, tooth setting resin and a contouring resin. Gohlke Wehre reported in a randomized clinical study that light activated material could be recommended to patients with hypersensitivity to PMMA [40]. However, although visible-light cured resin exhibited comparable transverse strength, hardness, rigidity, non-toxicity as compared to heat-cured acrylic resins, its susceptibility to staining and brittleness and its low impact resistance has limited its use [39,41].…”
