Clinical phenotype and β-cell autoimmunity in Italian patients with adult-onset diabetes

Abstract: Objective: To characterize the phenotype of a large population of Italian patients with adult onset ($ 40 years) diabetes who were attending outpatient clinics and who were screened for glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 autoantibodies (GADA), protein tyrosine phosphatase IA-2 (IA-2A) and IA2b/phogrin (IA-2bA). Design and methods: This was a cross-sectional study comprising a total of 881 patients, aged # 70 years, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after the age of 40 years, and consecutively recruited in five clinic… Show more

“…Compared with other large studies, this prevalence is less than those reported in some northern European populations such as in the U.K. Prospective Diabetes Study (6,7) and the Botnia Study (8), slightly lower than that of another Italian study (10), and very close to that of the international A Diabetes Outcome Progression Trial (9).…”

“…7,33 diabetes in older age groups is characterized by an increase in the proportion of women is consistent with literature data. [26][27][28] However, there are still insufficient data to make a firm conclusion about the sex incidence of autoimmune diabetes over the age of 50 years. 25 Interestingly, we observed a correlation between the number of autoantibodies detected at diagnosis and sex distribution.…”

“…UKPDS 25 reported, in a larger population of LADA patients, that high GADA titer was associated with a significant higher risk of insulin requirement only among subjects older than 55 years at diagnosis (1). Afterwards, conflicting results were reported in the literature; some studies demonstrated that a high titer of GADA was associated with a shorter insulin-free period (9,10,11), whereas others did not support this hypothesis (6,12).…”
