Clinical polymorphism of cystinosis encephalopathy. Results of treatment with cysteamine

Abstract: Of the 26 cystinotic patients over 19 years of age followed in our institution, 7 developed CNS complications at a mean age of 23 years. Two forms were observed. The first, associating cerebellar and pyramidal signs, mental deterioration and finally pseudo-bulbar palsy, may be called cystinosis encephalopathy. The other form resembled a stroke-like episode with coma and hemiplegia or milder symptoms. Hydrocephalus was rare and not associated with clinical symptoms in this series. Cysteamine was administered fo… Show more

“…Despite a growing understanding of the genetic, pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of cystinosis [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][36][37][38], only limited information is available on the longterm developmental and psychosocial outcome of this disease. This study provides further information on intellectual and motor performance (IP and MP), quality of life (QOL) and psychosocial adjustment (PA) in children and adolescents with cystinosis.…”

“…Based on our patient's revesible clinical and radiological findings, we excluded cystinosis encephalopathy while evaluating the differential diagnosis. 2 In our case report, we presented Cranial CT and MR images of a pediatric patient with Cystinosis in PRES and saw that Cystinosis did not change these radiologic findings. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome should be considered in differential diagnosis of pediatric patients with cystinosis admitting with convulsion and encephalopathy.…”

“…2 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cystinosis shows frequently cerebral/cerebellar atrophy with ventriculomegaly. 3 Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinic-radiographic entity of heterogeneous etiologies that are grouped together because of similar findings on neuro-imaging and associated symptom complex of headache, vision loss, altered mentation, and seizures.…”

“…Yapısına girdiği glutatiyondan dolayı sisteaminin hücre savunma sistemlerinde bir rol oynayabileceği düşünülmektedir. Sisteamin vücutta hipotaurine dönüşerek idrarla atıl-maktadır [21][22][23] . Bu araştırmada sisteaminin farelerde 3-MC ile indüklenen genotoksisite üzerine koruyucu etkisinin olup, olmadığı araştırılmıştır.…”
