Clinical predictive factors for temporomandibular disorders following combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment in patients with Class III malocclusion

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to identify clinical factors predisposing to the development or worsening of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) following orthodontic surgical treatment for Class III malocclusion. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 88 patients with Class III malocclusion having undergone a combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment. Temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle examinations were available prior to treatment and one year post-operatively. … Show more

“…9,7 The impact of OS on the TMJ and the surrounding structures is still controversial. 6,10,12,13 Studies report a significant reduction in TMD symptoms and facial pain after OS. [5][6][7][8][9][10] However, there is also a risk of developing TMD following OS.…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10] However, there is also a risk of developing TMD following OS. [13][14][15] The masticatory function is impaired regardless of class II or III type of skeletal deformity in patients with DFD. 3,[16][17][18] Various methods are available to measure the masticatory function, such as self-reported questionnaires, maximum bite force, occlusal contact, chewing artificial material or food substance, and muscle activity.…”

“…Literatures report that anterior crossbite could be relieved through orthodontic treatment by means of repositioning the condyle or rotating the mandible. It is generally considered that those common methods have potential risks of causing open bite or TMD [8,9]. Therefore, the multiloop edgewise arch wire (MEAW) technique developed by Kim provides an effective approach for treatment of skeletal class III malocclusion with high angle [10].…”

“…As desordens articulares podem ser consideradas como sintomas indicativos à realização de cirurgia da ATM quando não se obtêm sucesso nas terapias conservadoras. Nessa perspectiva, a requisição de exames imaginológicos e a coleta do relato dos pacientes devem ser avaliadas com cautela 3 . As patologias que acometem a ATM de maneira expressiva influenciam na função mastigatória, movimentos articulares, limitação de abertura bucal e estética.…”
