Clinical profile and evolution of infants with deformational plagiocephaly included in a conservative treatment program

Abstract: The findings suggest that the physiotherapy protocol presented is effective to correct plagiocephaly. Severity of plagiocephaly is a marker that should be taken into account when designing actions aimed at improving gross motor skill development.

“…Therefore, it is necessary to coach parents in handling and stimulating their child, especially in the early months of life and to focus on children with positional preference, which corresponds to the conclusions of the studies by Aarnivala et al [1] and Cavalier et al [10]. A short period of PPT is effective in the earlier reduction of DP [9, 43], especially when it is started before 3 months of age [44]. This may reduce parental fear and increase self-efficacy.…”

“…In children with DP and DB, several conservative interventions are applied: (paediatric) physical therapy [5, 9, 43], helmet therapy [18, 24, 27, 32, 36, 37, 46], manual therapy [8], osteopathy [35], and surgical intervention [22, 30]. …”

“…The risk factors for DP can be divided into perinatal risk factors and maternal risk factors, including a low education level, young maternal age, and bottle feeding. Perinatal/birth risk factors include first-born infants [10], supine positioning, premature birth, prolonged intubation, male gender, intrauterine restriction in multiple gestation pregnancies (fraternal twins > maternal twins) [8], breech position in uterus, primiparous mothers, assisted delivery, maternal age >35 years, birth trauma, congenital anomalies, a low activity level, delayed milestones, bottle feeding, and prolonged labor [7,11]. The patient in our study was an identical twin, corresponding to a known risk factor for DP.…”

“…They had been clinically diagnosed of moderate or severe non synostotic plagiocephaly (in order to have similar treatment) at some point during the first year of age. Severity has previously shown to influence the acquisition of motor skills . The diagnosis of moderate and severe plagiocephaly was made through measurements of cranial vault.…”
