Clinical Relevance of Circulating, Cell-Free and Exosomal microRNAs in Plasma and Serum of Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract: The expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in a tissue- and development-specific manner has indicated that they play an essential role in the maintenance of biological homeostasis. In cancer, the deregulation of these small non-coding RNA molecules modulates the expression of numerous tumor-associated genes and cellular processes. The high levels of cancer-associated sensitivity and specificity of plasma/serum and exosomal miRNA profiles reflect disease development, tumor load, malignant progression towards metastat… Show more

“…3,4 Although all these components of liquid biopsies have advantages and limitations (for reviews, see refs. 20,21 ), the present review will focus on cfDNA. cfDNA carries information about the dynamics of cancer-specific genetic and epigenetic alterations.…”

“…Other published results (118) suggest that exosome-mediated discharge of tumor-suppressor miRNA is selected in tumor evolution as a mechanism to organize the activation of a metastatic cascade (119). The load of exosomes is given for the parental cells and the circumstances in which they deliver them, which implies that circulating miRNAs in exosomes have the ability to serve as prognostic and predictive biomarkers (120).…”

“…Systemic therapies (hormones, cytotoxic agents, and others) and target‐based therapies (using antibodies or specific ligand/receptors) are the most common therapeutic strategies used for control and treatment of BC. Therapeutic choices and sequences depend on the BC stages and receptors . BC cells can develop resistance to these therapeutic agents by different mechanisms including extruding drugs by exosomes .…”
