“…With application of the adult ISHLT criteria for moderate and severe PGD after pediatric cardiac transplantation, moderate/severe PGD occurred frequently in children in the current era (16.3%). This incidence is similar to that reported by studies after application of these guidelines in adults, with PGD ranging from 9%‐32% . A previous assessment of PGD from our institution in an earlier era (1986‐2001), similarly defined by need for MCS or high‐dose inotropes, to be 32.7% overall.…”

“…In 2014, ISHLT consensus guidelines were published defining standardized criteria for PGD, as well as allowing for classification of severity . Since this publication, several adult centers have validated these criteria, primarily in single‐center series, with prevalence ranging from 9%‐32% . They also have demonstrated increased mortality in patients with moderate as well as severe PGD.…”

“…The PGD consensus statement by the ISHLT committee was used to retrospectively determine the diagnosis and degree of PGD by evaluating patients' clinical, echocardiographic, and hemodynamic data within 24 hours after heart transplantation. 1 The new grading system defines severe PGD as the requirement of mechanical circulatory support except for intraaortic balloon pump. At our center, all patients with severe PGD were managed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).…”

“…Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) remains the leading cause of mortality in patients post‐orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) . Total incidence of PGD has been found to be 7.4%, with a 30‐day and 1‐year mortality of 30% and 34.6%, respectively .…”

“…The incidence of severe primary graft dysfunction in our study is comparable to previous reports in adult HTx recipients. Studies by Sabatino et al and Takeda et al reported that severe primary graft dysfunction occurred in 6.8% and 7.4% of HTx recipients, respectively . Similarly, a single center analysis of pediatric HTx recipients reported an incidence of primary graft dysfunction of 8.4% (17 out of 203 patients) .…”
