Clinical research on the therapeutic effect of the electro‐acupuncture treatment in patients with depression

Abstract: Electro-acupuncture (EA) stiniulation has been found to influence the brain (norepinephrine nietabolism in experimental animals). Preliminary clinical research has shown that EA treatment is as effective as aniitriptyline for ' patients with depression. In this study, two consecutive clinical studies on the treatment of depression with EA are conducted. The first study was double blind placebo controlled, in which 29 depressed inpatients wvere recruited.Patients were randomly divided into three groups: EA + pla… Show more

“…EA was as effective as amitriptyline and mianserin and had fewer side effects. [63][64][65][66][67][68] As an augmentation to mianserin, acupuncture showed a slight benefit, 69 and laser acupuncture was significantly more helpful than placebo laser. 70 In patients with bipolar disorder, acupuncture augmentation of antidepressants yielded significant improvement over medication alone.…”

“…70 The results also showed that electroacupuncture was equal to amitriptyline in treating depression, with significantly fewer side effects (P < .001). Electroacupuncture induced a better therapeutic efficacy for anxiety somatization and cognitive process then did amitriptyline (P < .05).…”

“…6,7 These earlier studies were followed by clinical studies from 1998 when the use of manual needle acupuncture in depression was revisited. 9 In a randomized controlled needle acupuncture study using acupoints relevant to mood, as well as secondary acupoints tailored to individual subjects, it was found that acupuncture in depression was better than placebo.…”
