Clinical Significance of Arterial Stiffness and Thickness Biomarkers in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Up-To-Date Meta-Analysis

Abstract: BackgroundType 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previous studies explored the association of T2DM with arterial stiffness and thickness biomarkers including the augmentation index (AIX), aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV), carotid intima-media wall thickness (IMT) as well as blood pressure (BP), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C); however the conclusions are either inconsistent or incomprehensive.Material/MethodsTh… Show more

“…Our previous study revealed that CAD patients in the high-AS group had a higher percentage of DM, with higher fasting sugar and serum levels of insulin and HOMA-IR, compared to patients with low AS [ 31 ]. One meta-analysis, which enrolled 1222 DM patients, showed a significant association between DM incidence and AS measured by cfPWV [ 32 ]. Taken together, age and BP, as well as DM, were consistently and independently associated with cfPWV.…”

“…A prospective study reported the association of both total serum cholesterol levels and the differences in cholesterol homeostasis with cIMT [ 16 ]. In diabetic patients, the latest evidence-based medicine data show a significant increase in IMT [ 17 ].…”

“…Moreover, the duration of DM was also independently associated with cfPWV independent of age, gender, BP, or renal function and led to an increasing prevalence of CV events [ 29 ]. In a meta-analysis that encompassed 2316 patients, a significant association between DM and aortic PWV was revealed [ 30 ]. CKD may be a risk factor for the increased incidence of AS; a recent study reported a eGFR less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 among patients with CKD was associated with higher brachial-ankle PWVs [ 31 ]; likewise, eGFR was negatively associated with PWV in patients with CVD without renal disease and in patients with CKD stage 3 and 4 [ 32 , 33 ].…”
