Clinical significance of thickened sphenoid sinus mucosa in rathke's cleft cyst

Abstract: Background:To determine the clinical significance of thickening of the sphenoid sinus mucosa (TSSM) in Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC).Methods:We retrospectively reviewed patients with pituitary lesions. A total of 99 patients, who underwent surgery of pituitary lesions between 2008 and 2015, were analyzed to evaluate the clinical significance of TSSM using magnetic resonance imaging. The patients with TSSM were evaluated for their characteristics. Results:Of the 99 operations, 15 patients with paranasal sinusitis, d… Show more

“…Some of these studies suggest that NFPA may lead to mucosal thickening in the SS. [5][6][7] Takasuna et al 9 retrospectively reviewed 84 patients with pituitary lesions, which included 51 PA, 18 Rathke's cleft cyst and 15 other tumours. The frequency of SS mucosal thickening was 16.7% and 2% for Rathke's cleft cyst and PAs, respectively.…”

“…Only a few studies noted that SS mucosal thickening can be detected on preoperative MRI scans in patients with pituitary apoplexy (PA) and Rathke's cleft cyst. [5][6][7][8][9] However, the reported incidences in these studies were different from each other, and some of them had a relatively small sample size. On the other hand, there is no study that has investigated the relationship between NFPAs and SS mucosal thickening.…”

“…Inconsistencies in the incidence of SS mucosal thickening on preoperative MRI scans among patients diagnosed with pituitary apoplexy and Rathke's cleft cyst have been reported [7][8][9][10][11]. Only Şahin B et al explored the association between the presence of NFPA and SS mucosal thickening [5].…”

“…In a recent study of healthy individuals aged 50 to 65 years, SS mucosal thickening was observed in only 7% of sinuses on MRI scans [6]. Discrepancies in the incidence of sphenoid sinus (SS) mucosal thickening on preoperative MRI scans among patients diagnosed with pituitary apoplexy (PA) and Rathke's cleft cyst have been reported [7][8][9][10][11]. In a recent paper, Şahin B et al assessed the relationship between NFPAs and SS parameters (mucosal thickening, cysts, lateral recess, distances between carotid arteries and optic nerves) on MRI scans [5].…”

“…For instance, SS pathology may manifest radiologically as membrane thickening in conditions such as isolated sphenoid sinusitis, pituitary apoplexy, and anterior/posterior pituitary dysfunction (Arita et al 2001). This membrane thickening can be the result of a sudden increase in intrasellar pressure which causes congestion of dural blood flow, thus leading to membrane thickening (Takasuna et al 2017). In the present study, although, the frequency of pathological findings (18.2%) such as membrane bulging or complete sinus opacification was much less compared to the percentage of healthy sinuses (81.8%), their timely diagnosis is paramount.…”
