Clinical significance of transurethral tru‐cut biopsy in confirmation of bladder tumor invasive character

Abstract: Objectives:To evaluate the feasibility of resection (TURBT) replacement in patients with strong suspicion of invasive bladder tumor by transurethral tru-cut biopsy carried out during cystoscopy. Methods: Fifty-eight patients (52 men and six women; mean age 65 years, range 43-79) presenting with extensive bladder tumor suggested by ultrasound and computed tomography were included in the study. Each patient was submitted to transurethral, cystoscopically-guided tru-cut biopsy of bladder tumor before the planned … Show more

“…Transurethral ultrasonography has been considered for bladder cancer staging, despite facing technical challenges like acoustic shadows from tumor interface calcification and ultrasound absorption by larger tumors [ 9 ]. The depth of bladder wall infiltration is indicated by deep biopsy, although inaccuracies tend to increase as the disease progresses [ 10 ]. By determining the depth of invasion, it is possible to assess whether transurethral resection of tumors will be sufficient or if segmental resection or cystectomy will be necessary [ 11 ].…”

“…[ 12 ] The tru-cut needle biopsy process entails passing the gap near the needle's tip into the lesion, then passing the surrounding sheath with a cutting tip below the needle. [ 13 14 ] The sheath then slices the specimen in the gap created by the needle, after which the needle with the cutting tip is inserted into the lesion and a tru-cut biopsy is done. The needle was inserted into the core of the tissue and aspirated backward and filled the needle trough.…”

“…Additionally, recent studies focused on modified techniques designed to enhance the performance of TURBT. These include transurethral en bloc resection, en bloc holmium laser resection, and transurethral Tru‐Cut biopsy [19–21].…”
