Clinical supervision research from 1981 to 1993: A methodological critique.

Abstract: statistical variables (e.g., effect size, statistical power, and Type I and Type II error rates). The data revealed a shift to realistic field studies, unchecked Type I and Type II error rates, medium effect sizes, and inattention to hypothesis validity. Recommendations for designing and conducting a feasible and well-designed supervision study are offered. It can be argued that a primary goal of research in clinical supervision is to test and improve theory and to guide the practice of supervision (Ellis, 1991… Show more

“…However, while much research exists on the effects of supervisors on trainees, there has been a continual, but mostly unheard, call for examination of the effect of supervisors on client outcome (Ellis, Ladany, Krengel, & Schult, 1996;Holloway & Neufeldt, 1995;Lambert & Arnold, 1987). Holloway and Carroll (1996), in particular, called this issue into sharp focus by chastising researchers for focusing too much on the impact of supervision on trainee development at the expense of public protection, drawing an analogy to "viewing parenthood solely for the enrichment of parents" (p. 54).…”

“…Natürlich geht es um die Erforschung eines sehr komplexen Gegenstandes [Holloway, 1995;Wampold und Holloway, 1997]. Soll sie praxisrelevant und zudem auch methodisch angemessen erfolgen, heißt das, daß hohe und nicht leicht zu erfüllende Anforderungen zu bewältigen sind [siehe dazu die methodenkritische Metaanalyse von Ellis et al, 1996].…”

“…The level of agreement reported is modest but is consistent with findings from previous studies where untrained raters are used Tweed et al, 2010). Researchers have highlighted the need for the development SUPERVISOR AND PEER RATINGS and more efficient use of structured and psychometrically validated scales within supervision (Ellis, Ladany, Krengel, & Schult, 1996;Gonsalvez & McLeod, 2008). It is possible that better inter-rater reliability (between and within supervisor and peer groups) would have been achieved through training of raters.…”
