Clinical trial networks in orthopaedic surgery

Abstract: The aim of this study was to review the role of clinical trial networks in orthopaedic surgery. A total of two electronic databases (MEDLINE and EMBASE) were searched from inception to September 2013 with no language restrictions. Articles related to randomised controlled trials (RCTs), research networks and orthopaedic research, were identified and reviewed. The usefulness of trainee-led research collaborations is reported and our knowledge of current clinical trial infrastructure further supplements the revi… Show more

“…[2] A developing trainee collaborative provided the infrastructure to enable this. [3] Nationally, this study demonstrates 81% adherence to NICE guidelines for non-operatively treated uni-malleolar ankle fractures though found considerable variability in the early radiographic reassessment. It establishes a national baseline with 21% of clinicians allowing early weight-bearing postoperatively.…”

“…As these trainees become consultants, a culture of trials could be distilled in UK surgical practice’ . Such translatability is supported by the recent use of surgical trainee collaboratives in Europe and recognition that collaborative research networks play an important role in supporting clinical research in orthopaedic surgery . However, care must be taken to ensure collaboration involves contribution to conceptualization, as data collection whilst essential does not necessarily promote holistic development of an individual's research capability.…”

“…The study was conceived and led by the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences, and coordinated through the British Orthopaedic Network Environment (BONE), an online orthopaedic research group (organised by the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association), where collaborators were recruited and coordinated. 12 Ethical approval was not required as assessed using the Health Research Authority online decision tool (http://www.hra-decisiontools.org.uk/ research/). All collaborators registered the study with their respective base hospitals.…”
