Clinical usefulness of endoscopic intranasal dacryocystorhinostomy

Abstract: Closure of the surgical opening was seen in two cases (8.3%). In both cases, after the closed region was opened using an endoscopic procedure, symptoms resolved. Finally, lacrimal passage obstruction was not observed by lacrimal irrigation in any patient. None of the patients in the present study experienced major complications during or after surgery, and since their symptoms improved, the degree of satisfaction was high. When compared to external DCR, endoscopic intranasal DCR showed no statistically signifi… Show more

“… 55 Both external and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) approaches have been shown to be successful in the management of epiphora and orbital pseudotumor. 5 , 45 48 , 58 60 However, external DCR can lead to wound necrosis and nasocutaneous fistula, endonasal cyst and punctal membrane formation. 55 , 61 , 62 In addition, endoscopic approach offers the advantage to treat a possible coexisting sinonasal disease that, if left untreated, can lead to DCR failure.…”

“…This scarless surgery, is quick, with minimal trauma to the orbicularis occuli muscle which assists the lacrimal pump. 10 Under direct endoscopic vision, the stoma can be sufficiently enlarged and properly positioned to increase the likelihood of continued patency.…”

“…Delaney90 reviewed the success rate of external DCR for adult patients with partial LD obstruction and found subjective success rates of 84% at four months of follow-up and 70% at three years of follow-up. Endonasal DCR success rates vary from 63 to 94% and may be complicated by nasal bleeding, nasal mucosal scarring, granuloma, osteotomy-nasal septal adhesion, and damage to the orbital contents 9697. Wormald and Tsirbas70 assessed the results of endonasal DCR in adult patients with partial LD obstruction at a minimum of 12 months’ follow-up, and reported an 84% success rate .…”
