Clinical utility of F-18 FDG PET-CT in the initial evaluation of lung cancer

Abstract: ᅟ 1) With few exceptions, solitary pulmonary nodules can safely be considered benign if the PET-CT scan is negative. Exceptions consist of small (<1 cm) and non-solid, solitary pulmonary nodules. These abnormalities should be followed up by CT in a structured programme. 2) No curative-intent treatment should be commenced until a PET-CT scan has excluded occult distant metastases. 3) In general, lymph node metastasis in the mediastinum cannot be ruled out on the basis of a negative PET-CT, and confirmative inva… Show more

“…Akciğer kanserinde FDG PET/BT görüntüleme tedavi planlaması için günümüzde mutlaka yapılması gereken bir inceleme olarak kabul edilmektedir (2,3,6,7,8,21). Özellikle erken evre hastalıkta tanısal işlemlerin uzaması hasta prognozunu olumsuz yönde etkileyebilir (22).…”

“…The value is then typically compared with computed tomography (CT) findings to determine the probability of malignancy. PET has been considered the standard of care for cancer patients for the clinical assessment of mediastinal lymphadenopathy . As a result, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network has recommended the use of [ 18 F]fludeoxyglucose ([ 18 F]FDG) PET‐CT for the clinical staging of cancer patients …”

“…PET is relatively sensitive for identifying metabolically active LNs; however, the findings are not entirely specific . For example, metabolically active infectious lesions and/or inflammatory lesions can increase the uptake of [ 18 F]FDG by lymphocytes.…”
