Clinical value of self-assessment risk of osteoporosis in Chinese

Abstract: AbstractBackgroundEarly detection of high-risk population for osteoporosis is the key to preventing this disease. Methodology: In this cross-sectional study a continuous sample of 270 women and 89 men (age: 20–90 years) was divided into four groups by age (≤ 55 or > 55 years) and sex. “…27 Additional methods for self-modulated analysis of bone health have been constructed, such as the Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) and the International Osteoporosis Foundation's (IOF) tests. 28 OSTA and IOR gave low-, medium-, and high-risk grades for metabolic bone diseases, determining a subject's relative need to seek a physician's assistance.…”

“…(5) OSTA index calculation: OSTA index was calculated using the formula of (weight in kilograms age in years) × 0.2, established by Koh et al (2001) [17]. An OSTA index of − 1 to − 4 is regarded as medium risk of sustaining osteoporosis, greater than − 1 as low risk, and less than − 4 as high risk [33,34]. (6) Subgroup stratification: The study population was then divided into subgroups according to sex and age (< 65 vs. ≥ 65 years old) for analysis, considering osteoporosis starts earlier and gets worse faster in women; however, starting at about age 65, both sexes lose bone at about the same rate [35,36].…”
