“…Vignette-based inquiry makes use of simulations of realistic clinical encounters "to elicit subjects' knowledge, attitudes, and/or opinions according to how they state they would behave in the hypothetical situation depicted." 35,36 Vignette-based inquiry has been widely used in human medicine to evaluate the process of providing care, including factors that influence physicians' evaluations of patients, 37,38 formulation of diagnoses, 38,39 and selection of treatments, 40,41 and is a recognized and validated method of assessing clinical decision making and quality within health care. “…Our treatment program requires a multidimensional approach that binds medical, psychopharmacological, cognitive, and behavioral methods (Colenda et al, 1996;Rosenberg, 2000). Our unit employs comprehensive geriatric assessment that focuses on syndromes rather than individual disease entities.…”

“…International studies report varying rates of neuroleptic use in long-term care, ranging from 44% in England (Gilleard et al, 1983), 30.7% in Australia (Snowdon & Vaughan, 1997), 24% in Scotland (McGrath & Jackson, 1996, and 17% in Canada (Earthy et al, 1999). physicians (Colenda et al, 1996), facility size (Ray et al, 1980), and nursing staff levels (Svarstad & Mount, 1991). Nevertheless, there is increasing evidence of concern, particularly in the United Kingdom, about the use of these drugs in long-term care facilities and the general lack of adequate controls and guidelines (Hughes et al, 1999;Turrell et al, 1999).…”
