Clinicians' use of and attitudes towards technology to provide and support interventions in child and adolescent mental health services

Abstract: Background: Technology can increase child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) capacity by supporting and delivering interventions, yet it has not been widely adopted by CAMHS child mental health professionals. Uptake can either be facilitated or obstructed by child mental health professionals' attitudes, which remain largely unknown. Method: One hundred fifty-four CAMHS child mental health professionals completed a questionnaire about their use of, and attitudes towards, using technology with children… Show more

“…This is illustrated by data that indicate that 96% of European youth (aged 16–24) use the internet regularly ( 31 ). Furthermore, research shows that young people report using the internet to find information pertaining to mental health ( 32 ), they have positive perceptions about using the internet for mental health related-issues ( 33 ), and clinicians hold positive attitudes toward using technology for treatment too ( 34 ). Moreover, online interventions hold the potential to decrease costs for the individual and the healthcare system.…”

“…The restrictions on physical contact have demanded a transition to novel formats for facilitating clinical contacts, including telephone and video consultations, to continue service provision. Before the pandemic, a survey of 154 CAMHS clinicians in the UK estimated that only 4.5% were using videoconferencing technology in their clinical role on a weekly basis (Cliffe et al, 2020). Research has highlighted several barriers to the use of technology in health settings, including the limited integration as a part of routine practice (Topooco et al, 2017), resulting from clinicians' uncertainties about the availability of technologies and the technical aspects regarding privacy and security, reliability, and safety of use (Cliffe et al, 2020).…”

It is also noteworthy that the evidence‐base for CAMHS intervention is predominantly based upon face‐to‐face working.…”

“…Another commonly observed finding was the clinicians’ favorable attitudes toward the intervention. This reflects overall positive attitudes and an eagerness to incorporate technology into practice found in research on clinicians’ attitudes toward technology in mental health care [ 78 ]. This is important considering that there is research highlighting that clinicians’ attitudes are pivotal in intervention implementation [ 79 ].…”
