Clinicopathologic Profiles and Prognosis of Gastric Carcinomas from the Cardia, Fundus/Body and Antrum

Abstract: Background/Aims: The putative influence of tumor location on the biologic behavior of gastric carcinomas remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate if carcinomas arising in the three types of gastric mucosa (cardia, fundus/body and antrum) have different clinical and pathologic profiles and carry a different prognosis. Methods: Three hundred and two patients with cardia or gastric carcinoma resected between 1984 and 1996 were retrospectively studied. Cases were divided in three groups acco… Show more

“…The results of the current study are in agreement with those of other studies [4, 10] showing that carcinomas in the cardia of the stomach are larger than those in the distal third of the stomach. Some investigators have reported a male predominance in CGC [11,12,13].…”

“…While we observed a similar tendency, no significant difference was detected in the gender ratio between CGC and DTGC patients. CGC differs from DTGC in the distribution of the T category of the pTNM classification system, and several studies have shown a low proportion of T1 carcinoma and a high proportion of T3 and T4 carcinoma [10, 13]. Therefore, carcinomas in the cardia of the stomach are resected at more advanced stages than DTGCs, and our results concurred with those of previous reports.…”

“…Cancer of the gastric cardia and fundus is commonly found in late or the advanced stage at the initial diagnosis [10,11] . It was warranted to link the poor prognosis to lymph node metastases for cancer of this anatomical location reported with a higher frequency of perigastric lymph nodes and higher proportion of overall lymph node metastasis [12,13] .…”
