Clinicopathological features and survival for gallbladder NEN: a population-based study

Abstract: Purpose Gallbladder neuroendocrine neoplasm (GB-NEN) is a relatively rare neoplasm, accounting for 0.5% of all neuroendocrine neoplasm cases and 2.1% of gallbladder cancers. Because of the limited understanding of GB-NEN, the aim of this study was to explore the clinicopathology and survival of GB-NEN patients selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods A total of 248 GB-NEN patients from the SEER database diagnosed between 2004 and 2015 were included. Kaplan–Meier … Show more

“…In another study of 8 GB-NEC patients, the median age was 60 years and the male to female ratio was 1:3. [ 15 ] Cen et al [ 1 ] collected the data of 248 GB-NEN cases from the SEER database, including 169 GB-NEC cases and the majority were female (70.4%), white (75.7%), and married (60.4%).…”

“…[ 32 ] The patients undergoing surgery had better survival than patients without surgery. [ 1 ] It has been reported that simple cholecystectomy could be performed for in situ GB-NENs and those of T1N0M0 stage. [ 3 ] In the study performed by Liu et al, [ 33 ] all 3 patients with GB-NEC were in the stage of T1bN0M0 and underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with gallbladder bed cautery without any postoperative chemotherapy or radiotherapy.…”

“…[ 1 ] According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End result (SEER) database, the incidence of NENs in America was 6.98 per 100,000 in 2012. [ 2 ] They are more common in gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract, accounting for 66% and 31% of all NENs, respectively. [ 3 ] Primary gallbladder neuroendocrine neoplasm (GB-NEN), which comprises only 0.5% of all NENs, is extremely rare in clinical practice with few reports.…”

“…The recent studies, which proposed prognostic nomograms/systems, pointed out that patient and tumor-related factors are closely associated with prognosis of GBC patients 7,8 . Notably, several studies have found that tumor size, as an easily quanti able indicator in imaging diagnosis and preoperative assessment, can affect the survival outcome of GBC patients [7][8][9] . However, the optimal cutoff value of tumor size for predicting prognosis of GBC is still controversial.…”
