Clinicopathological significance of chemokine receptor (CCR1, CCR3, CCR4, CCR5, CCR7 and CXCR4) expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas

Abstract: These findings show that chemokine receptors may have an important role in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma progression, regional lymph node metastasis and recurrence.

“…3 Overexpressed CXCR4 is predominantly associated with progression and poor prognosis in several tumors including oral cancer. 4,5 We previously proved that blockade of CXCR4/SDF-1 axis by reducing the secretion of SDF-1 derived from cancer-associated fibroblasts could significantly suppress the proliferation, invasion and migration of cancer cells in vitro, 6 similar results were observed under suppression of CXCR4 activity either by shRNA or pharmacological inhibitor. 7,8 Increasing evidences show that CXCR4 participates in chemotherapy resistance in various cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and nonsmall cell lung cancer.…”

“…CCR4 has been proven that it may have an important role in HNSCC progression, regional lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Signi cant progress has been made on the correlation of overall survival with gene expression in HNSCCs (19)(20)(21). Many of these experiments were done in tumor cell lines, animal models, or patients' tumor samples.…”

“…The increased expression of CCR7 on tumor cells has been shown to be associated with a poor prognosis and with the development of lymph node metastases in HNSCC [11,42]. While the expression of CCR7 on HNSCC cells is increased, both in cell lines and patients [10], the frequency of peripheral CD8 + CCR7 + T c cells has been found to be decreased in HNSCC patients [12,13], which in turn is associated with disease recurrence.…”
