Clonal-aggregative multicellularity entrained by salinity in one of the closest relative of animals

Núria Ros-Rocher,

Uzuki Horo
et al.

Abstract: Multicellularity evolved multiple times independently during eukaryotic diversification. Two distinct mechanisms underpin multicellularity: clonal development (serial cell division of a single precursor cell) and aggregation (in which independent cells assemble into a multicellular entity). Clonal and aggregative development are traditionally considered to be mutually exclusive and to result from independent acquisitions of multicellularity. Here, we show that the choanoflagellate Choanoeca flexa, a close rela… Show more

“…Yet it is still unclear which aspects of the reversible aggregation behaviors in present-day animals are homologous to the morphologically similar behaviors in Capsaspora 2, 7 or other unicellular animal relatives. 9, 15, 16 Specifically, homologous genes driving similar behaviors in Capsaspora may imply ancient ancestry of aspects of aggregative multicellularity in animals. 2 Therefore, we must better understand the molecular mechanisms of Capsaspora aggregation induction in order to compare it to similar animal behaviors.…”
