Clone size in American aspens

Abstract: The area of two clones of Populus tremuloides Michaux in the Fish Lake Basin, Sevier County, Utah, was determined using aerial photographs combined with ground delineation using leaf, bark, and stem characteristics. The clones occupied 24.9 acres (10.1 ha) and 106.8 acres (43.3 ha) and contained about 15 000 and 47 000 ramets, respectively. Other clones up to an estimated 200 acres (81.0 ha) were observed in the vicinity and in other areas of the central and southern Rocky Mountains. In contrast, the largest P… Show more

“…Previously reported ranges of individuals or clumps of ramets include 2-4 m in Fagus japonica (Kitamura et al, 1992), 4 m in Quercus chrysolepis (Montalvo et al, 1997), 8 m in Fagus grandifolia (Jones and Raynal, 1987), and areas of 50 m 2 in Thujopsis dolabrata (Hashimoto et al, 1999) and up to 43 ha in Populus tremuloides (Kemperman and Barnes, 1976). Thus, the A. trabeculosa range found in this study was similar to those of F. japonica and Q. chrysolepis.…”

“…Forests consisting of Populus trees can comprise patchworks of large contiguous blocks of genetically identical ramets (39)(40)(41). Individuals from different parts of the same natural monoclonal stand, or clonal individuals grown at different geographic sites, could have divergent "histories" on account of differences in parameters such as water availability, prevailing wind, soil conditions, or exposure to pests or pathogens.…”

“…This increased growth is an example of facilitation among aspen trees whereby the seedling cluster occupied the physical above-ground space, and likely even below-ground space, thereby restricting forb competition. Aspen is a clonal species used to growing in very close proximity with other ramets in order to integrate resources below ground (Kemperman and Barnes, 1976). Our results provide an example of a similar process occurring above ground with individual genets in the form of plug stock seedlings.…”
