“…Malaria, a very common disease globally with a high mortality rate, is caused by Plasmodium, a parasitic organism [121][122][123][124]. The parasite gets into the human body through the bites of infected mosquitoes [125][126][127]. It is one of the deadliest diseases in the world [128], as it is estimated that every 2 min, a child dies of malaria, and each year more than two hundred million new cases of the disease are reported [129].…”

“…Though we cannot bring about an instant cure, considering the urgency of eradicating the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper will open new perspectives about plant molecules in developing various strategies against infectious diseases [ 12 , 13 ]. Mother Nature has always been considered as the prime source for the discovery of unique and new bioactive compounds, which have helped in combatting various diseases and infections [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Medicinal plants are known to produce innumerable bioactive metabolites with different pharmacological properties, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-malarial, anti-hypertension, anti-ageing, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemia, anti-osteoporotic, hepato-protective, immunomodulator, etc.…”

“…This study considers the HDP as one of the proposed native mediators for heme to Hz transformation, as reported in the previous literature. 19,21,[37][38][39][40][41]61 However, it is possible that other mediators such as free lipids or lipids in the plasma membrane could actually be facilitating this transformation within the parasite's digestive vacuole. 62 Nonetheless, in our in vitro settings, HDP was found to be the most efficient mediator of heme to β-hematin transformation, 19 which allowed us to observe results that other studies may have missed.…”

“…The HDP-mediated rapid transformation of heme to β-hematin enables us to make several observations unique to this study. We selected a pH value of 5.2 for our preliminary experiments since all earlier studies on HDP were performed at this pH. , However, most experiments were repeated at pH 4.8 to better simulate the conditions within the parasite’s digestive vacuole, i.e., the Hz production site. , In addition, the selection of pH 4.8 was also influenced by the fact that the pH value of 4.8 has been widely used in earlier studies on the in vitro kinetics of heme to β-hematin. ,, The influence of CQ on heme to β-hematin transformation was studied by inhibition and time-kinetics experiments. The time-kinetics data were analyzed by the KJMA equation, , commonly used to study isothermal phase transformation reactions.…”
