Close Positive Correlation between the Lymphocyte Response to Hen Egg White and House Dust Mites in Infants with Atopic Dermatitis

Abstract: Background: It was recently hypothesized that food allergens sensitize infants with atopic dermatitis (AD) via the skin. If this is the case, an intimate positive correlation should be observed between immune responses to both food and indoor allergens. Methods: One hundred and seven infants with AD and 32 controls were enrolled. The proliferation of lymphocytes stimulated with hen egg white (EW) or house dust mite (HDM) allergens was measured by means of an allergen-specific lymphocyte stimulation test (ALST)… Show more

“…This accelerates inflammation, but does not necessarily result in specific sensitization [37]. Mite allergens can activate keratinocytes and induce them to produce and secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines [137139]. Allergens may sensitize infants with AD via the skin.…”

“…DFE is known to contribute to the development of AD via the activation of inflammasomes in the epidermal keratinocytes [1,32]. Previous research showed that repeated application of DFE produced AD symptoms, including epidermis thickening, fibrosis in the dermis and the infiltration of inflammatory cells (eosinophils and mast cells) [33].…”

“…The CM‐sIgE level was measured using the ImmunoCAP system (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Tokyo, Japan), and ≥0.35 kU/L was regarded as positive. Allergen‐specific lymphocyte stimulation test (ALST) was also performed using flow cytometry or radioisotopes …”
