Closed-loop optogenetic perturbation of macaque oculomotor cerebellum: evidence for an internal saccade model

Abstract: Internal models are essential for the production of accurate movements. The accuracy of saccadic eye movements is thought to be mediated by an internal model of orbital mechanics encoded in the cerebellum. The cerebellum may also be part of a feedback loop that predicts the displacement of the eye in real time and compares the predicted displacement to the desired displacement command to ensure that saccades land on target. To investigate the role of the cerebellum in these two aspects of saccade production, w… Show more

“…Considerable progress has been made in recent years using new tools 8,[11][12][13][14] and new perspectives 87 to understand the cerebellar contributions to sensorimotor [41][42][43][44] and non-sensorimotor behaviors [45][46][47][48] in health and disease [49][50][51] . Underlying this considerable progress is an ever-improving ability to manipulate the cerebellum without compromising rigorous measures of behavior.…”

“…Powerful new opto-and chemogenetic 39 approaches allow control of particular cerebellar cell types, reviewed in 40 . Recent work used such activation/inhibition to investigate cerebellar contributions to sensorimotor [41][42][43][44] and non-sensorimotor behaviors [45][46][47][48] in health and disease [49][50][51] . Both approaches come with technical hurdles: optogenetics requires targeting light to the cerebellum, while chemogenetics use bioactive co-factors 52 .…”
