Closure of Colostomy

Abstract: We analyzed the records of 77 cases of loop colostomy closure in Vietnam War Casualties. All records were complete from the date of injury to discharge following colostomy closure. Simple of the loop colostomy was performed in 44 patients and resection of the stoma and reanastomosis of bowel segments was performed in 33 patients. Average operating time for simple closure of the loop was 70 minutes compared to 115 minutes for resection and anastomosis. Nasogastric suction was used less frequently and for a shor… Show more

“…Timing of closure is probably also important, and although not specifically examined in this study, we agree with the observations of other authors that closure after 3 months is preferable to earlier closure. 11,13,19 Although TC was equivalent to LI when measuring parameters of safety, LI showed significant advantages in stoma management. Since both stomas are equally feasible as methods of fecal diversion, the selection process should be left to the surgeon and patient.…”

“…Stoma takedown is often considered a "simple" procedure without intention; however, as clearly demonstrated in the literature, it is associated with significant morbidity, as high as 5 to 39% [ 4 , 5 ]. Several factors, such as the patient' underlying disease, the type of ostomy, and the operation time, were reported to be related to postoperative complications [ 6 - 8 ].…”
