Clothing and Adornment

Abstract: This guide introduces readers to some of the primary and secondary literature on clothing and adornment in antiquity, spanning ancient near eastern contexts to those of early Christianity. In particular, the discussion examines the social roles of these phenomena, including how they can function as symbols of power, status and honor. Gender issues also come to the fore, as women’s dress faces increasing scrutiny by male writers.

“…Equally significant, in creating "a visible manifestation of the civilised state of being, of cultural superiority" (Baizerman et al, 2008, p. 124), and as a second skin, clothing expresses a collective second self (Basile, 2011). Reflecting social identity (Batten, 2010), it distinguishes between us and others, as is evident in the case of a school uniform (Johnson et al, 2014). It is also a sign of social class (F. Ma et al, 2012), used to announce social status, authority, and wealth.…”

“…People allocate their budget on clothes when they prepare for certain events and social gatherings [40][41][42]. This finding implies that the purpose of clothing expenses is likely to refresh the mental condition of elderly people because clothing expenses are associated with social desire [43,44]. Indeed, Park et al [4] alleged that minimizing isolation plays an important role in improving life.…”

“…There have been numerous studies of permanent body modifications, such as circumcision (Bernat 2009; Thiessen 2011); tattooing (Huehnergard & Liebowitz 2013; Jacobs 2014a; Fox 2019); and piercing (Malul 2007; Jacobs 2014b). Scholars have also recognized the significance of temporary dress practices involving hair (Galpaz‐Feller 2005; Niditch 2008) and clothing (Huddlestun 2002; Kim 2004; Neufeld 2005; Bender 2008; Batten 2010; Cras 2011; Staubli 2012; Fox 2013; Liebermann 2020). The relationship between dress and gender in the Hebrew Bible has come to the fore in studies on the prohibition of cross‐dressing (Fox 2009; Vedele 2008; Lipka 2018); male‐specific clothing (Low 2011; Rooke 2009); and female‐specific dress (Kersken 2008; Stavrakopoulou 2013; Quick 2019a, 2019b).…”
