Clothing Disposal Behavior of Taiwanese Consumers with Respect to Environmental Protection and Sustainability

Abstract: Large quantities of clothing are routinely discarded, ending up in landfills that contribute to the environmental crisis; hence, it is worthwhile investigating how to dispose of this waste in a sustainable way. This study considered environmental values and prosocial behavior from behaviorism theory. The aim was to set up an environmental protection model for the sustainable disposal of consumer clothing. A structural equation modeling analysis of 407 undergraduate and postgraduate consumer data in Taiwan reve… Show more

“…These results suggest that eco-literacy is an important predictor within this model and highlights the need to change consumers' attitudes toward recycling through consideration of the knowledge of the waste issues present within the fashion industry. Thus, in line with findings from Rotimi et al (2021) and Lai and Chang (2020), there needs to be programs developed to educate consumers. The authors believe that one method to achieve this is through marketing campaigns.…”

“…Where studies have explored clothing disposal, a mix of alternative theories have been applied other than TPB. These include Lai and Chang (2020), who utilised Behaviourism Theory to explore the influence of environmental values and prosocial behaviours on various end-of-life clothing disposal, including reuse, resale and donation, and Koukouvinos (2012), who used the Theory of Interpersonal Behaviour to investigate factors that impact clothing disposal behaviour in Greece. Little to no research to the authors' knowledge has focused on applying TPB to end-of-life products with a focus on fashion waste.…”

“…Most of the reasons for clothing donation in the circular economy are found to be based on sustainability and environmental values. For example, the flooding of fast fashion has brought about environmental problems, so we see donation to increase clothing lifespan [17,18] and donation prompted by environmental values and social behaviors [19,20]. Therefore, it can be confirmed that fashion donation has the characteristics of nonreciprocity, money irrelevance, singular objects, de facto sharing, and ownership within the sharing/exchange continuum.…”

“…Alternatively, Mukendi and Henninger (2020) suggested that fashion rentals could curb the higher consumption of clothing (although it is quite difficult for firms to operate in this space, thus explaining the slow growth of this model). However, environmental values and prosocial behavior may positively influence consumers to donate clothing (Lai & Chang, 2020).…”
