Abstract. Measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) were made in downtown Toronto during August and September, 2003. CCN measurements were performed at 0.58% supersaturation using a thermal-gradient diffusion chamber, whereas the aerosol size distribution and composition were simultaneously measured with a TSI SMPS and APS system and an Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS), respectively. Aerosol composition data shows that the particles were predominately organic in nature, in particular for those with a vacuum aerodynamic diameter of <0.25 µm. In this study, the largest contribution to CCN concentrations came from this size range, suggesting that the CCN are also organic-rich. Using the size and composition information, detailed CCN closure analyses were performed. In the first analysis, the particles were assumed to be internally mixed, the organic fraction was assumed to be insoluble, and the inorganic fraction was assumed to be ammonium sulfate. The AMS time-of-flight data were used for Köhler theory predictions for each particle size and composition to obtain the dry diameter required for activation. By so doing, this closure analysis yielded an average value of CCN predicted /CCN observed =1.12±0.05. However, several sample days showed distinct bimodal distributions, and a closure analysis was performed after decoupling the two particle modes. This analysis yielded an average value of CCN predicted /CCN observed =1.03±0.05. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to determine the aerosol/CCN closure if the organic solubility, droplet surface tension, or chamber supersaturation were varied.

Heterogeneous reactions of trace gases with mineral dust aerosol not only impact the chemical balance of the atmosphere but also the physicochemical properties of the dust particle and the ability of the particle to act as a cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Recent field studies have shown that carbonate minerals are preferentially associated with nitrates whereas aluminum silicates (i.e., clay minerals) are preferentially associated with sulfates. To better understand how this association can impact the climate effects of mineral dust particles, we have measured the CCN activity of a number of pure and internal mixtures of aerosols relevant to these recent field studies. The CCN activity of CaCO 3 -Ca(NO 3 ) 2 aerosol, simulating the activity of mineral dust aerosol that has been partially processed by nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, is significantly enhanced relative to CaCO 3 aerosol of the same diameter. Similar results are obtained for a clay mineral, kaolinite, internally mixed with (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . For example, at 0.3% supersaturation, a 200 nm particle containing a soluble nitrate or sulfate component is 2 to 4 times more active than an unreacted particle. The results presented here show that when determining the contribution of mineral dust aerosol to the overall impact of the aerosol indirect effect on radiative forcing, changes in chemical composition due to atmospheric processing cannot be ignored.

Size-resolved measurements of the ratios of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) to condensation nuclei for particles with different hygroscopic growth factors (g) and distributions of g at 85% relative humidity were performed for urban aerosols over Nagoya, Japan. The CCN efficiency spectra of less hygroscopic particles (g of 1.0 and 1.1) were very different from those of more hygroscopic particles (g of 1.25 and 1.4). While the differences between the CCN activation diameters predicted from g (d act,g85 ) and those measured (d act,CCN ) were within 12% for more hygroscopic particles, the differences were larger (16%-41%) for less hygroscopic particles. Possible causes of this included surface tension reduction, the dependence of κ on the concentration of the solution, the existence of sparingly soluble materials, and asphericity of particles. The number concentrations of CCN (N CCN ) and cloud droplets (N cd ) and the effective radius of cloud droplets (R eff ) were estimated from the distributions of g using a cloud parcel model. The influences of the differences between d act,g85 and d act,CCN and the existence of CCN-inactive particles on the model assessment were small. With high updraft velocity, incorporating both less and more hygroscopic particles into the model led to substantial increases in N CCN and N cd and a decrease in R eff as compared to the hypothetical cases that only more hygroscopic particles were present. The results indicated that less hygroscopic particles significantly contribute to cloud droplet formation and assessments of g distributions are useful in this regard.
