Cluster breakup of18O and22Ne

Abstract: The 14 C + α breakup of 18 O has been studied at energies of E beam = 136 MeV and 148.5 MeV, using a 200 µg cm −2 thick Be target. Several states belonging to the proposed octupole deformed band, previously associated with the 8.04 MeV, 1 − and 8.22 MeV, 2 + states, have been populated through inelastic excitation. A candidate for the 7 − member was not found, providing evidence that the negative parity component of the band terminates at the 5 − member. This is shown to be consistent with the Nilsson descript… Show more

“…The 1 − state at 8.04 MeV was identified as the bandhead of the K π = 0 − inversion doublet band in two recent experiments. 24), 25) Our results clearly indicate that this cannot be the case since dimensionless reduced α-width of this state is very small (0.02). The same conclusion can be reached with respect to the next member of the K π = 0 − inversion doublet band suggested in Ref.…”

“…In Ref. [24], it was proposed that the K π =0 − band built on the 1 − state at 8.04 MeV [23], that was in same energy region with the K π =0 − 2 band predicted by the cluster models, was the parity doublet partner of the K π =0 + α-cluster band. In the case of 20 O, nothing is known about the clustering.…”
