Cluster-size dependent internal dynamics and magnetic anisotropy of Ho ions in HoM2N@C80and Ho2MN@C80families (M = Sc, Lu, Y)

Abstract: The paramagnetic NMR study of HoM 2 N@C 80 values. This work shows that the magnetic properties of the species confined inside the fullerene cages can be tuned using the geometrical factors such as the cluster and the cage size.

“…Sc-Y, 7 Sc-Ti, 8 and Sc-V, 9 all Sc-lanthanide binary systems forming NCFs, and even two ternary-metal NCFs, ScYErN@C 80 and DyErScN@C 80 , have been produced. 10 A number of non-Sc mixed-metal NCFs have also been synthesized, including Ti-Y, 11 Ce-Y, 10e,f Ce-Lu, 12 Gd-Ho, 13 Gd-Lu, 13,14 Ho-Y, 15 Ho-Lu, 14,15 and Lu-Y. 16 In addition to the alteration of yields and product distribution in comparison with corresponding homometallic NCFs, mixedmetal NCFs may also exhibit different chemical, 7,17 electrochemical, 10e,f,12a and magnetic properties.…”

The nitride ion in the center of the M 3 N cluster bears a large negative charge (the formal charge is −3e; the QTAIM analysis gives the value of ca −1.7e).…”

“…For example, GdLu 2 N@C 80 and HoLu 2 N@C 80 have been proposed as multi‐functional agents for simultaneous use in MRI (Gd) with X‐ray contrast (Lu) or radiopharmaceutical (Ho) with X‐ray contrast (Lu), respectively 52. The incorporation of paramagnetic rare‐earth metal ions into mixed‐metal endohedrals (e.g., HoSc 2 N@C 80 ,53 DySc 2 N@C 80 54) generates new magnetic materials. The redox potential of the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ couple in the mixed‐metal endohedrals CeSc 2 N@C 80 , CeY 2 N@C 80 , and CeLu 2 N@C 80 varies in response to the different metal ions within the cage 34.…”

“…In contrast to all other SIMs discussed in this review, endohedral metallofullerenes are not synthesized via conventional coordination chemistry approaches but by an arc discharge technique [113]. Slow relaxation in the endohedral metallofullerenes DySc 2 N@C 80 and HoSc 2 N@C 80 has been reported [114][115][116][117], with magnetization relaxation times of DySc 2 N@C 80 exceeding several hours at 2 K. Since these molecules can be sublimed in UHV [118,119] they are appealing candidates for surface studies alike the other two families of SIMs mentioned before. The molecular structure obtained from density-functional theory (DFT) geometry optimization is shown in figure 9 along with the magnetic hysteresis observed on DySc 2 N@C 80 .…”
