Clustering trends of melanoma incidence and mortality: A worldwide assessment from 1995 to 2019

Abstract: Background: Melanoma is a skin cancer that has higher mortality among cutaneous malignant tumours. Tumour incidence in most world regions is rising. Here, we intend to highlight these trends in the world. Methods:We used the global burden of disease dataset to assess the incidence and mortality of melanoma from 1995 to 2019 in 204 countries/territories. To identify country/territory groups with similar trends of melanoma incidence and mortality, a model-based clustering with a mixture of multivariate t-distribu… Show more

“…Melanoma is a skin cancer formed by malignant melanocytes, the incidence of which is increasing rapidly worldwide. 1 Although chemotherapy is widely used for treating melanoma, its effectiveness is limited due to severe side effects. As a result, there is an urgent need for a new treatment approach.…”

“…Skin cutaneous melanoma, a malignant tumor that arises from melanocytes, is implicated in 90% of skin cancer‐associated mortalities and is recognized as one of the most aggressive skin malignancies. 26 Based on the high SKCM mortality rates, it is crucial to assign classifier models to predict prognosis as early as possible. Even though screening, diagnosis and treatment of SKCM have made great progress, patients with advanced stage melanoma still have a poor prognosis.…”

“…The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study provides a valuable resource, meticulously tracking various diseases and injuries worldwide, including melanoma [ 13 ]. Thanks to the GBD study, detailed melanoma incidence data exist for numerous regions and countries [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. However, Spain lacks comparable analyses, creating a significant gap in understanding the nationwide burden of this disease.…”
