This Review presents a comprehensive literature review of an important class of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) that is based on cyclic amides (lactams). The major aspects of the KHIs, such as their synthesis, inhibition mechanism, toxicity, biodegradability, performance, and cloud point, are thoroughly discussed. Data for 70 KHIs made of homo/co/terpolymers from 330 experiments are collected and evaluated for performance. The effects of the inhibitor concentration, molecular weight, monomer ratio of the co/terpolymers, and 35 different synergist chemicals on various KHIs are also studied. In conclusion, the top 10 KHIs with the highest performances that had a cloud point above 70 °C are presented. The copolymer (1:1) N-vinylpyrrolidone/N-vinyl-caprolactam (VP/VCap) is found to have the highest induction time (IT) of 13 to 14 h at 0.25 wt % and at a cooling rate of 1 °C/h. Some KHIs like Inhibex BIO-800 and poly(N-vinyl azacyclooctanone) (PVACO) also have a very high ITs (17 and 13.5 h, respectively) at 0.25 wt % and at a cooling rate of 1 °C/h, but they have low cloud points (<25 °C). Guanidinium salts (n-Bu6GuanCl/n-Bu6GuanBr) and a phosphonium salt, (n-Pe)4PBr, are found to be the best synergists for the cyclic-amide-based KHIs. When used at 0.15 to 0.30 wt % along with the KHIs, they further increase the IT by 3–5 h.

An improved efficient synthesis for 2,4‐azepandiones (3, 8, and 14) could be achieved by a careful control of the reaction conditions to cyclize ethyl 4‐(N‐acetylarylamino) butanoate (1, 7, and 13), respectively. The ethyl 4‐arylamino butanoate (9 or 12) was prepared by stirring the ethyl 4‐bromobutanoate and substituted anilines at room temperature. Then, they were acetylated with acetyl chloride and triethylamine under the conditions that avoid the formation of 2‐pyrrolidinone derivatives 10. Due to the rapid decomposition of the acetylated product (7 or 13) to its starting material (9 or 12), the reaction mixture is directly transferred without workup to the next cyclization step. The azepandione synthesis is favored by using a weak base at low temperature, where it is in a competition with the other modes of ring closure. The structures of the new compounds were supported by correct analytical and spectral data.

“…A suspension of phwdered 6-amino-177-2,3-benzothiazin-4(377)-one 2.2-dioxide10 (11.7 g, 55 mmol) in 110 ml of H20 and 66 ml of concentrated HC1 was stirred for 0.5 hr, then was treated dropwise at 0°with a solution of NaN02 (3.9 g, 55 mmol) in H20 (11 ml), and additionally stirred at this temperature for 0.5 hr; then it was portionwise poured into a stirred solution of CuCl (5.6 g, 56.5 mmol) in concentrated HC1 (56 ml) and after 1 hr of additional stirring was kept in the cold overnight. The separated solid was washed and twice crystallized: yield 5.0 g. 7-Car bethoxyamino-277-1,2-benzothiazin-3(477)-one 1,1-Dioxide (2r). Into a solution of 6.58 g (31 mmol) of 7-amino-277-1.2-benzothiazin-3(477)-one 1,1-dioxide10 in 390 ml of H20 and 22 ml of concentrated HC1, 16.9 g (155 mmol) of ethyl chloroformate was added dropwise at 5°; after further stirring at room temperature for 3.5 hr, the suspension was filtered, and the solid was washed, dried (6.6 g), and crystallized: yield 5.5 g.…”
