CNS Activity of Jussiaea suffruticosa Linn. Extract in Rats and Mice

Abstract: The dried extract of Jussiaea suffruticosa Linn. (Onagraceae) was evaluated for CNS activity in rats and mice. General behaviour, exploratory behaviour, muscle relaxant activity and phenobarbitone sodium-induced sleeping time were evaluated. The whole plant of J. suffruticosa Linn. was extracted with methanol and the solvent was removed by vacuum distillation. The extract caused a reduction in spontaneous activity (general behavioural pro®le), a decrease in exploratory behavioural pattern in the Y-maze and Head… Show more

“…The behavioral study of the animals was evaluated by EPM. The EPM test is based on a premise where the exposure to an EPM evoked an approach avoidance conflict that was considerably stronger than that evoked by the exposure to an enclosed arm (Murugesan et al, 1999;Guaraldo et al, 2000). The decrease in aversion to the open arm is the result of an anxiolytic effect expressed by the increase time spent and entries in the open arm.…”

“…For all test, Group-1 served as controls, Group-2 for standard and Group-3, Group-4 received experimental plant extract. Group 1 received the vehicle 1% Tween 80 in water (at the dose of 10 ml/kg body weight), group 2 received various standard drugs like Diazepam, Indomethacin, Aspirin at different doses [22][23][24], and group 3 and 4 received 200-400 mg/kg dose of plant extract on the basis of toxicity study of the plant extract.…”

“…The whole plant juice is also used as a diuretic. We have previously evaluated some of these activities in rats and mice (Murugesan et al 1999(Murugesan et al , 2000a. It has come to our notice that patients in the rural area of Tamilnadu (India) use the whole plant of J. suffruticosa, crushed with water and taken orally, for the treatment of diabetes.…”
