Co-benefit as an approach to align climate change concerns with national development objectives: solid waste management

Abstract: Impinging local environmental problems on the one hand and constantly persuasive climate change concerns on the other put developing Asian cities in a dilemma as to which direction they should channel their efforts. While local matters are their immediate mandate, increasing awareness of climate change vulnerabilities adds weight to global problems. In this context, the concepts of co-benefi ts and ancillary benefi ts play an important role in aligning climate change concerns into sector-specifi c developmenta… Show more

“…In addition to these local impacts, reductions in traffic and outlays for new roads reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a co-benefit related directly to global climate change. Similar co-benefits and trade-offs have been described for health-energy system linkages [30,31], carbon management and urban development [32], solid waste management [33], and low-carbon transport systems [34].…”

“…Also, co-benefi ts provide the necessary bridge for the alignment of climate change concerns with national development objectives (Yedla and Park 2009 ). Urban planning decisions could offer synergies of development, infrastructure supply, low carbon development, and climate resilience.…”

“…Adequate awareness of the effects of climate change on buildings and environment has led to the development of green buildings which is one of major components of urban greenery [23-24] and green economy [25]. Awareness is also responsible for the integration of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies into government policy or sustainable development goals [26][27]. Sustainability in buildings means designing a building to withstand the effects of climate change and to ensure low energy consumption, indoor comfort [28-29], adequate ventilation and reduction of carbon emissions [30][31][32].…”
