Co-delivery of etoposide and curcumin by lipid nanoparticulate drug delivery system for the treatment of gastric tumors

Abstract: Context: Gastric carcinoma (GC) is one of the most common cancers and the second most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths. Chemotherapy is an important therapeutic modality for GC. However, chemoresistance limited its success rate. Combination chemotherapy is often applied to prevent drug-induced resistance in cancers. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the co-delivery of etoposide (ETP) and curcumin (CUR) with one nanoparticle can result in synergistic effects of both drugs. Methods: E… Show more

“…Thus, nanotechnology has emerged as an efficient alternative for curcumin incorporation into the tumor cells. In fact, new formulations with nanocarriers for co-delivery of curcumin with anti-neoplastic drugs have been tested using in vitro settings of cervical cancer cells [ 149 ]. In addition, formulations including other compounds such as epicatechin gallate, resveratrol and curcumin (TriCurin) have been analyzed with results showing a synergism in vitro and in vivo [ 150 , 151 ].…”

“…Beside, curcumin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and anticancer activities [34,35]. The phytochemical could generate a synergic activity with several kinds of anticancer drugs (such as Gemcitabine, Paclitaxel, Camptothecin, and Cisplatin) that was effective against the growth of many cancer cell lines [36,37,38,39,40]. However, Cur is lipophilic nature and poor aqueous solubility as well as low aqueous stability due to its fast metabolism leading to reduce the bioavailability of Cur.…”

“…Folate lipid nanoparticles could target into MCF7 cell line with the synergism of paclitaxel and curcumin [19]. Doxorubicin (DOX)/Cur nanoparticles inducing apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma, etoposide/Cur delivered by lipid nanostructures in gastric oncology regimens, camptothecin/Cur encapsulated in chitosan-modified polymeric nanoparticles to treat colon cancer have subsequently proved these trigger facilitated combined agents to be much more effective [20,21,22].…”
