Co-designing a co-design tool to strengthen ideation in digital experience design at museums

Abstract: Co-designing a co-design tool to strengthen ideation in digital experience design at museumsThis article presents and discusses a paper-based co-design tool that was developed in order to strengthen ideation in digital experience design processes at museums. The tool, called the ASAP Map, was co-designed as part of an action research project with 10 museums from EU and the USA. The museum partners used the tool in their home institutions and the article focuses on their feedback and the following iterations of… Show more

“…The superiority of a solution is highly related to its context, i.e., the problem/challenge that is addressed. Most co-design tools are either ad hoc for one specific problem/ challenge [59,[63][64][65] or flexibly designed to address a series of challenges that can be classified under the same cluster [66][67][68]. Considering the exploration and experimental nature, developing an ad hoc gamification lacks flexibility.…”

“…Similarly, we designed a template for involving non-expert citizens and stakeholders in addressing the general and specific characteristics of the HNH framework. Designing tools to facilitate the transfer of relevant information for design knowledge is relevant both for designers [87] and for impacting the non-expert's mindsets [88], as is the case in citizen science processes [89,90]. We co-designed a template (Figure 4) within the research team to support the collective creativity that happens in collaborative-design-based processes [91][92][93].…”

“…In museums, co‐design is an approach that has primarily been employed in the design of technologies in exhibits (e.g., Ciolfi et al., 2016; Fuks et al., 2012; Olesen et al., 2020). This approach has focused on the co‐creation that happens with a variety of stakeholders involved in developing exhibit pieces and signage (Avram et al., 2019).…”
