Co-encapsulation of human serum albumin and superparamagnetic iron oxide in PLGA nanoparticles: Part II. Effect of process variables on protein model drug encapsulation efficiency

Abstract: This study investigates encapsulation efficiency of model drug, encapsulated by magnetic PLGA (poly D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (NPs). This is the following part of our preceding paper, which is referred in this paper as Part I. Magnetic nanoparticles and model drug human serum albumin (HSA) loaded PLGA NPs were prepared by double emulsion solvent evaporation method. Among five important process variables, concentration of PLGA and concentration of HSA in the inner aqueous phase Encapsulation e… Show more

“…IgG-loaded PB NPs were prepared by W 1 /O/W 2 double emulsion solvent evaporation method [26]. Briefly, predetermined quantity of IgG (10 mg) was dissolved in 0.1 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH 7.4) (1 mL) containing 50  μ L of Tween-80 (W 1 phase).…”

“…It is also emphasized that there is a long development and improving work behind the results of the present study. Some of our previous and recent papers [10][11][12][13][14][15] contain the most important achievements during the optimization of size and encapsulation efficiency of PLGA nanoparticles containing model proteins, while the properties of magnetic PLGA nanoparticles with the IFN-α active agent were initially improved in a PhD thesis [16]. In the present study we used all of the knowledge obtained during the almost 10-year development of PLGA nanoparticles to produce optimal interferon alpha containing nanoparticles.…”

“…In this view, the idea of combining the best aspects of magnetic NPs with biodegradable, biocompatible, and nanosized PLGA NPs would represent an innovative strategy for coupling both magnetic and drug delivery aims. Remarkably, the possible double use of PLGA NPs encapsulating IO NPs plus a pharmacologically active drug (ie, albumin or anticancer agents) 42,47,48 could open the way to new insight and therapeutic/imaging approaches with good translatability.…”
