Co-occurrence and distribution of deoxynivalenol, nivalenol and zearalenone in wheat from Brazil

Abstract: Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON), nivalenol (NIV) and zearalenone (ZEN) were investigated in wheat from the 2009 and 2010 crop years. Samples (n = 745) from commercial fields were collected in four wheat producing regions (WPR) which differed in weather conditions. Analyses were performed using HPLC-DAD. Contamination with ZEN, DON and NIV occurred in 56, 86 and 50%, respectively. Also, mean concentrations were different: DON = 1046 µg kg(-1), NIV < 100 µg kg(-1) and ZEN = 82 µg kg(-1). Co-occurrence o… Show more

“… 37 . The doses used in the present study (0.125, 0.5, 2 μM) is comparable to the circulating levels that could be achieved in animals, when considering that the average levels of NIV in maize and wheat samples for farm animals could reach 0.53, 1 and 15.28 mg/kg in Zimbabwe (in 2014) 2 , Brazil (in 2009) 1 and Hubei of China (in 2009) 39 , respectively. Besides, the natural exposure of animals to NIV was a long process, which make the animals more prone to be influenced by the toxin.…”

“…Nivalenol (NIV), a type B trichothecenes mycotoxin, is commonly found as a contaminant in cereals like wheat, maize and barley 1 , 2 . In animals, NIV can induce a series of toxic actions including diarrhea, emesis, anemia and suppression of appetite 3 .…”

“…Additionally, mycotoxins produced by different fungi are also among possible carcinogens. Mycotoxins may be found in different food products [158,159,160], including oilseeds, cereals, and milk; however, avoiding consumption of these products may or may not be a realistic option. DNA damage induced by different mycotoxins has been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo [127,161].…”

“…The antioxidant and potential beneficial effects of different sources of proanthocyanidins against human LDL-cholesterol oxidation and proliferation of breast cancer cells has already been reported [12,25,32]. Contamination with mycotoxins remains a concern for different food products such as milk, wheat and peanuts [33][34][35]. However, it is very difficult to avoid this kind of contamination; furthermore, avoidance from consuming this kind of food products is not always possible.…”
