Co-regulation of biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii: from mechanisms to therapeutic strategies

Sérgio G. Mendes,
Sofia I. Combo,
Thibault Allain
et al.

Abstract: In recent years, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged globally as a major threat to the healthcare system. It is now listed by the World Health Organization as a priority one for the need of new therapeutic agents. A. baumannii has the capacity to develop robust biofilms on biotic and abiotic surfaces. Biofilm development allows these bacteria to resist various environmental stressors, including antibiotics and lack of nutrients or water, which in turn allows the persistence of A. baumannii … Show more

“…A. baumannii exhibits several peculiarities in biofilm formation that contribute significantly to its persistence and MDR [29,30]. Biofilms are complex, structured communities of bacteria and/or fungi encased in a self-produced extracellular polymeric matrix consisting of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.…”

“…In addition to this, QS alters the gene expression cascades at which the microbial metabolism and susceptibility to the existing antibiotics could be altered. The bacteria in biofilms also communicate via horizontal gene exchange, where the resistance genes could also be transferred [4,6]. In this regard, further investigations should be carried out.…”

“…Several other therapeutic strategies are envisaged to fi ght antimicrobial resistance such as inhibition of biofi lm formation, antimicrobial peptides, and natural components like essential oil, metal nanoparticles, and quorum sensing disturbance [20]. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to start human clinical trials.…”
