CO2 flow in saline aquifer with salt precipitation

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to introduce the solution to two-phase flow in CO 2 /brine system with salt precipitation by applying mixed hybrid finite element (MHFE) method to pressure equation and finite volume (FV) method to saturation equation. Mixed finite element method solves pressure and velocity in two subspaces while hybrid method is an extension of mixed method, where the Lagrange multiplier is added to the former in order to ensure the continuity from one element to the adjacent elements. “…For the effects of permeability heterogeneities, the studies of rectilinear horizontal displacements show that a better recovery is achieved in heterogeneous porous media as compared with that in a homogeneous one (Camhi and Ruith, 2000). The strong influence of permeability heterogeneities to the fingering patterns and interfacial lengths in the injection-driven and rotationally induced flows were confirmed (Chen et al, 2016;Chen and Yan, 2015;Li et al, 2017;Pau et al, 2016). In addition, a scale coupling effect, or the so-called resonant effect, in which the scales of plume's size is compatible or slightly larger than the correlation length of permeability arises with prominent fingering competition in isotropic heterogeneous porous media (Li et al, 2019).…”
