CO2‐Undersaturated Melt Inclusions From the South West Indian Ridge Record Surprisingly Uniform Redox Conditions

Yves Moussallam,
Guillaume Georgeais,
Estelle F. Rose‐Koga
et al.

Abstract: The behavior of Fe3+ during mantle partial melting strongly influences the oxidation state of the resulting magmas, with implications for the evolution of the atmosphere's oxidation state. Here, we challenge a prevailing view that low‐degree partial melts are more oxidized due to the incompatible behavior of Fe3+. Our study is based on measurements of Fe3+/∑Fe along with major, minor, trace and volatile elements in olivine‐ and plagioclase‐hosted melt inclusions of CO2 undersaturated mantle melts in South West… Show more

“…We selected a sample EDUL_DR75_1_04 (CNRS 000 000 2592) presenting a pillow basalt dredged from the South West Indian Ridge (SWIR) collected at 2650-2900 mbsl (meters below sea level) at 37°51′48″S, 49°20′12″E (https://lithotheque.ipgp.fr/edul.html). The initial composition is 50.1 wt% SiO2, 1.42 wt% TiO2, 16.4 wt% Al2O3, 10.5 wt% FeOt, 0.2 wt% MnO, 7.0 wt% MgO, 11.4 wt% CaO, 2.4 wt% Na2O, 0.2 wt% K2O, and 0.1 wt% P2O5 (Moussallam et al, 2023).…”
