Co2+ substituted for Bi3+ in BiVO4 and its enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible LED light irradiation

Abstract: We investigated the fabrication of Co-doped BiVO4 (Bi1−xCoxVO4+δ, 0.05 < x < 0.5) by the substitution of Co ions for Bi sites in BiVO4.

“…This shift implies the change in the electronic environment of Bi and V ions by incorporation of Co ions inside the surface of BiVO 4 . 5,41 Jin and co-workers attributed a similar XPS shift to a change in metal cation coordination by the presence of V O s at the surface of BiVO 4 . 42 We have shown in our previous work that heat treatment of bare BiVO 4 under similar conditions resulted in a shift of Bi 4f, V 2p, and O 1s lines to the lower binding energy side, which was ascribed to the change in the Fermi level and increased band bending at the surface.…”

“…5d shows two peaks at 158.9 and 164.2 eV signifying Bi 4f 7/2 and Bi 4f 5/2 , respectively. 40,69 As displayed in Fig. 5e, two peaks at 529.8 and 531.2 eV could be attributed to V–OH and V–O in crystalline BiVO 4 respectively.…”

“…The shift in BE by 0.3 eV towards a higher BE side was observed for 0.05 Co-BV, compared to the un-doped BV, indicating the change in the surface electronic structure of 0.05 Co-BV after Co-doping. 20 The V 2p core level spectrum for BV and 0.05 Co-BV (Fig. 3b) broadens towards the lower BE side, suggesting the presence of more than one type of vanadium species.…”
