Asymmetric effect of financial development and energy consumption on environmental degradation in South Asia? New evidence from non-linear ARDL analysis

This paper looks at the causes of environmental degradation by regarding the asymmetric effect of financial development and energy consumption in the presence of urbanization and economic growth for South Asia. Using a yearly dataset from 1974 to 2014, this study employs the non-linear autoregressive distributive lag (NARDL) approach to investigate the asymmetry that emerges from positive or negative shocks of financial development and energy consumption. The results of NARDL model assert that the shocks in energy consumption, both positive and negative, significantly contribute to rise the environmental degradation in the long run and also cut down the density of CO 2 emissions in the short run. In contrast, only a negative shock in financial development has an adverse and significant impact on CO 2 emissions in the long run. Besides, the results of the ARDL model indicate that financial development declines environmental degradation, while energy consumption evolves the CO 2 emissions in the long run. This paper suggests that policymakers may strive to attain high economic success using environmental favorable energy consumption and financial development.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the economic potential of the regions from the mining sector of North Morowali, Central-Sulawesi, Indonesia, and the formulation of pro-business regional development management that aims to create synergy between the local government and mining sector entrepreneurs. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach by taking data in the form of primary data from FGD and secondary data observations from statistical bureau data in the North Morowali, Indonesia. The analysis unit uses SWOT analysis to determine the economic potential of the North Morowali and Location Quotient (LQ) to analyze the economic potential of the mining sector. The research period covers one year (2018-2019) in North Morowali, Indonesia. All the mining products have considerable potential as a financing unit in North Morowali, while mining potential has not been maximally exploited. The absence of regulations, facilities such as road access, and optimal land and sea transportation are the causes of the difficulty of optimization and access to explore mining products comprehensively. As a new province at Central Sulawesi, more efforts and the role of government are needed to focus attention to North Morowali as an area with great potential in the mining sector.

This study investigates the dynamic effects of economic development, international cooperation, electricity consumption, and political risk on the escalation of CO 2 emission in Vietnam. We adopted autoregressive distributed lag model and Granger causality method to examine the interaction between CO 2 and various economic and political factors, including foreign direct investment, trade openness, economic growth, manufacture, electricity consumption, and political risk in Vietnam since the economic revolution in 1986. The findings reflect opposite influence between these factors and the level of CO 2 in the intermediate and long-term durations. Accordingly, foreign direct investment and CO 2 emission have a bidirectional relationship, in which foreign direct investment accelerates short-term CO 2 emission, but reduces it in the long run through an interactive mechanism. Moreover, economic development increases the volume of CO 2 emission in both short and long run. There was also evidence that political risk has a negative effect on the environment. Overall, the findings confirm lasting negative environmental effects of economic growth, trade liberalization, and increased electricity consumption. These factors, with Granger causality, mutually affect the escalation of CO 2 in Vietnam. In order to control the level of CO 2 , more efforts are required to improve administrative transparency, attract high-quality foreign investment, and decouple the environment from economic development.
