Coal Desulfurization in Oxidative Acid Media Using Hydrogen Peroxide and Ozone: A Kinetic and Statistical Approach

Abstract: The removal of pyritic sulfur from a Mexican sub-bituminous coal in nitric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric acid solutions was investigated. The effect of the type and concentration of acid, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and ozone as oxidants, in a temperature range of 20−60 °C, was studied. The relevant factors in pyrite dissolution were determined by means of the statistical analysis of variance and optimized by the response surface method. Kinetic models were also evaluated, showing that the dissolution o… Show more

“…Oxidation with different oxidants, such as NaOCl, H 2 O 2 , and HNO 3 , has been extensively used for coal desulfurization (Li & Cho, 2005;Carrillo-Pedroza et al, 2009;Fallavena et al, 2012;Shen et al, 2012). Therefore, there should be SCCs present in the products from mild oxidation of coals.…”

“…Central composite design is a standard design of experiments on RSM that examine a polynomial relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variables, yielding information on the interaction between dependent and independent variables (Carrillo-Pedroza et al 2009;Montgomery 2005). The relationships between two processes, ash and pyritic sulfur removal, and three controllable conditions, particle size, agitation speed, and initial pH, were examined according to FCCCD.…”

“…For interpretation of the interaction of operational variables, the use of three-dimensional plots of the regression model has been highly recommended (Carrillo-Pedroza et al 2009;Montgomery 2005). Figure 6 shows the 3D surface plots for the ash removal efficiency.…”

“…There is growing concern regarding the oxidation of sulfide minerals (mainly pyrite, the most abundant sulfide on the planet) in sulfide-rich coal, resulting from exposure to oxygen and water or bacteria ( Thiobacilus ferroxidans , Gallionella ferruginea ). This oxidation promotes acidification of the environment and consequently the dissolution of metals in abandoned or operational mines, leading to acid mine drainage (AMD). , This prompts the mobilization of iron ions and sulfate to the medium in a wide pH range. In the absence of alkaline materials, acid production reactions can continue indefinitely…”
