Coating of macroemulsion and microemulsion silicones on poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibers: Evaluation of the thermal properties and flammability

Abstract: Silicone softeners are widely used in the textile industry to improve the soft handling and aesthetic feel of textiles. These compounds can influence the thermal characteristics and flammability of polyester fabrics, which need to be addressed as important issues of human safety. To do this, the thermal degradation and flammability of macroemulsion and microemulsion silicone coated polyester fibers were studied with various analytical techniques, namely, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric ana… Show more

“…An alternative explanation is that the nanoclay may migrate to the surface of the polymer and alter the material surface structures. It has been reported that nanosized additives tend to create agglomerates at the material surface due to their high surface area. The tendency varies on the basis of additive types, sizes, end-group functionalities, and molecular architectures. Further studies are needed to investigate the detailed mechanism(s) of the altered material surface structures after the loading of nanoclay into the polymer.…”

“…This enhancement of the char formation is ascribed to the high heat resistance, heat insulation effect and the mass transport barrier exerted by the clay particles themselves which is one measure of flame retardancy. [44,45] Other researchers suggested that the flame-retardant effect found in polymer-clay nanocomposites arises from the formation of char layers, which comes from the dispersion of clay structures within the nanocomposites. Clay particles slow the escape of volatile decomposition products during wool thermal analysis resulting to improve char formation.…”

“…It goes without saying that the thermal degradation of textiles generally occurs in three areas: initial, main and char. [48][49][50] In the rst area, the cotton amorphous regions are damaged, and the surface-adsorbed water molecules are evaporated, which results in a weight loss of the material of approximately 5%. Signicant degradation of cellulose occurs from 300-450 C due to the combustion of glucose and the degradation of the crystalline regions in the cellulose backbone.…”
