Cochlear implantation and quality of life in postlingually deaf adults: Long‐term follow‐up

Abstract: This is the first study to investigate long-term follow-up of CI patients, in all aspects of QoL combined with speech perception performance, in comparison with postlingually deaf adults without CI.

“…The overall score obtained in the group of individuals evaluated by the NCIQ-P version (70.25) was close to the data reported by other authors, (74.2) and (63.26), and described in the scientific literature (18,22) . The highest score was verified in the social domain, in agreement with the findings of previous studies (23,24) . This result is associated with the fact that this domain best represents the way CI interferes positively in the QoL of its users, because improvement of the auditory skills offers benefits in communication, contributing to better social interaction in daily life activities and broadening social relations.…”

“…This result is associated with the fact that this domain best represents the way CI interferes positively in the QoL of its users, because improvement of the auditory skills offers benefits in communication, contributing to better social interaction in daily life activities and broadening social relations. Other previous studies have reported that the benefit of speech perception seems to be a predictor of gains in QoL (24)(25)(26) . The high overall score obtained in this study for the subdomains basic and advanced sound perception, which belong to the physical domain, has also been described in the specific scientific literature (10,14,24,27,28) .…”

“…Older patients experienced a higher subjective satisfaction after cochlear implantation, regardless of their CI audiometric benefit. Similar and consistent results had been previously observed by different studies in the past [8,[25][26][27][28] . Numerous large scale studies have demonstrated that several previous patient attributes condition cochlear implantation outcomes.…”

“…Despite significant differences for speech recognition in noise between older and younger CI listeners, the two groups report equal HRQoL benefit on three of six subdomains. Previous research has demonstrated significant correlations between HRQoL and speech recognition abilities (Damen, Beynon, Krabbe, Mulder, & Mylanus, 2007;Hirschfelder, Grabel, & Olze, 2008), but significant correlations were not found among the present data. Independent performance of HRQoL and speech understanding suggests that one cannot replace the other, and both are valuable assessments within CI programs.…”
