Cochlear implantation in children with complex needs: the perceptions of professionals at cochlear implant centres

Abstract: There is a need for a consensus on the assessment of these children, with the development of more objective parent led observation measures to collect long-term data across centres. Closer collaboration with educators, particularly those with other expertise, would facilitate long-term management and asssessment. Data logging, now available, will help monitor wearing and use of system.

“…This may be due to the method used for the data collection, the limited cohort considered or to the selection bias of the patients. Concomitant health issues (such as cardiac malformations) are lifethreatening conditions requiring prompt intervention, consequently the treatment of hearing loss may be reasonably delayed in such cases, even for anesthetic considerations (25).…”

“…Bei ca. 30 bis 40 % der Kinder mit audiologischer CI-Indikation liegen Komorbiditäten vor oder sind im Laufe der kindlichen Entwicklung zu erwarten [21]. Bei Kindern mit Mehrfachbehinderung orientiert sich das Ziel einer CI-Versorgung an den individuellen Entwicklungsvoraussetzungen und wird im interdisziplinären Konsens modifiziert formuliert.…”

“…On the other hand, using cochlear implants has added more variables to consider, such as age at implantation and level of hearing loss before and after implantation, among others (Archbold et al, 2015). The development of language and reading skills in deaf students, whether implanted or hearing impaired, appear to be strongly determined by the level of hearing loss, as well as the age of access to amplification technology, parental or caregiver involvement, and access to educational resources that allow for adequate language development (Moeller et al, 2007;Nelson and Bruce, 2019).…”
